Managing Demand and Capacity in Emergency Care: Trendlytics Among the Finalists

Last Fall, the West Midlands Health and Wellbeing Innovation Network, in partnership with the Black Country ICB, launched a dynamic challenge-led innovation programme aimed at transforming the urgent and emergency care pathway. The programme brought together over 200 innovators to tackle key challenges faced by Black Country ICB, many of which are also common across ICBs in England. The goal was to find scalable solutions that would enhance both patient and staff experiences.

The 3 areas of the challenge:

• Data analysis, visualisation and predictive analytics to proactively manage demand and capacity.

• Using shared patient data across the system to improve patient pathways.

• Standardising referral mechanisms from 999 to downstream services to improve visibility and quality of data shared across the system.

Among the many great ideas, Trendlytics, a startup company that specialises in AI-powered predictive & prescriptive solutions for improving operational and staffing efficiency in the healthcare industry, stood out as one of the finalists, competing in the demand and capacity challenge area. Our solution leverages AI-based predictive analytics to accurately forecast both system-wide demand and capacity at a granular level, while also providing a regional overview crucial for Integrated Care Boards (ICBs) and System Control Centers (SCC). Furthermore, Trendlytics utilises prescriptive analytics to provide clear, actionable insights to better manage patient flow and align resources more effectively. 

Trendlytics demonstrated significant potential to alleviate pressure on urgent and emergency care services ultimately improving patient outcomes that was applauded by everyone in the audience.

While the challenge has concluded, our solution is now available to be refined, tested, and potentially scaled across the UK to improve staffing efficiency and patient experiences in urgent and emergency care.
